Student Success Statement

“We need the courage to start and continue what we should do, and the courage to stop what we shouldn’t do.”

-Richard L. Evans

We should not let peer pressure or the actions of others affect our decisions, do what you believe is right and others will soon start following you when they realize it is the best option. Either way no matter what do what you believe is right because at the end it is what will pay off best.

Student Responsibilities

Part 3

What is important to you is that you, as you start to reach milestones in your ambitions, you appreciate your own achievements. It is a boost, of course, if others appreciate what you have done too, but appreciating yourself will strengthen your self-belief, and reinforce your determination to succeed.

Some of the key characteristics you will find in those who are successful are perseverance, prepared to research, plan and work hard, practice a lot even when things do not seem to be going well, and an ability to recover and learn from setbacks. At the outset of whatever it is you are trying to succeed in, a strong vision of your  future, planning, and setting yourself achievable targets can all play an important role.

If you feel you do not naturally have all those characteristics, then do not despair. Each of them can be accomplished by your own application. You can use meditation and visualization techniques to initiate your vision, and they can certainly be learnt both for that purpose and for each step you take to reach your goals. Setting goals and objectives can be a personal or business technique that can be learnt. You can develop inner strength to succeed if you apply yourself to doing just that; that will enable you to recover from setbacks more easily.

“The Importance of good Sportsmanship”

Sportsmanship is important for athletes. It is not only the difference between a sore loser and a good sport but it is the difference between a player and an athlete. There are many ways sportsmanship is applied in athletic events and in all sports.

A Few Examples Are

·        In soccer if you are playing defense on an opponent and your footwork is not the best you might trip your opponent on accident. This does not mean you do not have sportsmanship; it would be an example of bad sportsmanship if you simply walked away from the accident without apologizing and helping the player get on his feet.

·        You are in a lacrosse game and you are trying to check the butt of an opponent and you accidently trip him, that does not make you a athlete with poor sportsmanship it would make you a poor athlete without good sportsmanship if you didn’t apologize and help him back up on his feet.

No matter what you accomplish, you should always be proud of yourself for what you have achieved. You should always have fun in what you do. Don’t be sad because you lost, be proud that you tried.

“Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom”

-George Washington Carver

Hard work early in your life pays off greatly in your future, why have fun for a couple years in your teenage life when you can work hard in your teenage life and be free of financial burdens in your adulthood because you choose the right and worked hard when it mattered

Student Responsibilities

Part 1

Students have the right to seize the responsibility for their own destiny and should be encouraged to do so. With every right comes responsibility!

1.       I have the responsibility to come to every class prepared to listen, to participate, and to learn.

2.       I have the responsibility to read the text carefully, noting important ideas and rephrasing concepts in my own words.

3.       I have the responsibility to work examples in the textbook and those given in class.

4.       I have the responsibility to consult other students, the teacher, an assistant, and other resources whenever I need the extra help.

5.       I have the responsibility to understand that the teacher is not primarily responsible for making me understand, but that it is my job to study and learn.

6.       I have the responsibility of keeping an open mind and trying to comprehend what the teacher is trying to get across.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT!!!

Student Success Statement

“My basic principle is that you don’t make decisions because they are easy; you don’t make them because they are cheap; you don’t make them because they’re popular; you make them because they’re right.

-Theodore Hesburgh

In life the decisions you make should be according to the possible outcome of the situation or decision and not how much effort it requires to complete. If you make decisions based on the effort needed to acquire the results you won’t go too far in life or do too well. You only live once (YOLO) so live life well and Choose The Right.

“Decisions Determine Destiny.”

-Thomas S. Monson

Whatever decision you make, will determine your future. If you make the wrong choices, you will receive bad consequences that may possibly lead you to live an unhealthy life.

The Decisions you make in life are the ones that determine and pave the path for your future. If you make the wrong choices your path won’t be as well built and as smooth as those who choose the right and make their future easier for themselves by doing what’s right early on.

Successful Students

Part 2

4. Successful students learn that a student and a teacher make a team. Most teachers want exactly what you want: they would like for you to learn the material in their respective classes and earn a good grade. Successful students reflect well on the efforts of any teacher; if you have learned your material, the instructor takes some justifiable pride in teaching. Join forces with your instructor, they are not an enemy, you share the same interests, the same goals- in short, you’re teammates. Get to know your professor. You’re the most valuable players on the same team. Your jobs are to work together for mutual success. Neither wishes to chalk up a losing season. Be a team player!

5. Successful students don’t sit in the back. Successful students minimize classroom distractions that interfere with learning. Students want the best seat available for their entertainment dollars, but willingly seek the worst seat for their educational dollars. Students who sit in the back cannot possibly be their teacher’s teammate (see no.4). why

Five keys to success are:

        i.            Choose the right crowd.

      ii.            Be respectful.

    iii.            Be Trustworthy.

    iv.            Be a good citizen.

      v.            Be well groomed.

Student Success Statement

“I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I must stand with anybody that stands right, and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong.”                                                                      - Abraham Lincoln

You must go with the right crowd. To be successful you must choose your friends wisely, go with the people who want what’s right to be done and you will be one of them, go with the wrong crowd and you will find yourself choosing the wrong, therefore know who your friends are and choose them wisely.

Successful Students

Part1

Successful students exhibit a combination of successful attitudes and behaviors as well as intellectual capacity. Successful students

1.       Successful students are responsible and active. Successful students get involved in their studies, accept responsibility for their own education, and are active participation in it!

Responsibility means control. It’s the difference between leading and being led. Your own efforts control your grade, you earn the glory or deserve the blame, you make the choice. Active classroom participation improves grades without increasing study time. You can sit there, act bored, daydream, or sleep. Or, you can actively listen, think, question, and take notes like someone in charge of their learning experience. Either option costs one class period. However the former method will require a large degree of additional work outside of class to achieve the same degree of learning the latter provides at one sitting. The choice is yours.

2.       Successful students have educational goals. Successful students have legitimate goals and are motivated by what they represent.

“Great beauty, great strength, and great riches are really and truly of no great use; a right heart exceeds all.”

-Benjamin Franklin

Materialistic items may consider you wealthy, but that does not mean you are a great and over-achieving person. Anyone can be wealthy or rich but what’s the point of being rich if it isn’t going to be used for the right reasons? A great heart can be of greater use than wealth. A great heart and persona cannot be stripped off you as wealth can. Your persona stays with you under all circumstances, materialistic items do not.

Characteristics of a Successful Student

Many students do not know what it takes to be successful in the educational environment. They understand good and bad grades in a general way, and they sense that they should attend classes, but that is where their knowledge begins and ends.

Most instructors know what a good student is- and is not. For one thing, a good student is not necessarily the most intelligent individual in the class.

The following is a list of some characteristics of good students. This list is a description of what a hard-working student does and what a teacher likes to see. By learning these characteristics, you may better understand the day-to-day and class-to-class behavior of successful students. The idea is to provide you with guidelines you can follow which will help you get down to the business of becoming a serious, successful student.

1.       Successful students attend classes regularly. They are on time. They listen and train themselves to pay attention. If they miss a session, they feel obligated to let the instructor know why before class begins, if possible, and their excuses are legitimate and reasonable. They make sure they get all missed assignments (by contacting the instructor or another student), and understand specifically what was covered in class. Successful students take responsibility for themselves and their actions.

“Right is right, even if everyone is against it. Wrong is wrong, even if everyone is for it”

-William penn

You must do what you believe is right, even though everyone is against it. Peer pressure shouldn’t be influential to someone who is choosing the right.

50 Habits of Successful People

(Habits 44-47)

44. They don’t rationalize failure. While many are talking about their age, their sore back, their lack of time, their poor genetics, their ‘bad luck’, their nasty boss and their lack of opportunities (all good reasons to fail), they are finding a way to succeed despite all their challenges.
45. They have an off switch. They know how to relax, enjoy what they have in their life and to have fun.

46. Their career is not their identity, it’s their job. It’s not who they are, it’s what they do.

47. They are more interested in effective than they are in easy. While the majority look for the quickest, easiest way (the shortcut) they look for the course of action which will produce the best results over the long term.

Summary Reflection: Ian

I think that this story was really interesting and inspiring. It was a very generous action for 10 year old Ian to give away the ball to a younger kid. He made a clever decision by giving away that ball. At the end he got rewarded with a better souvenir and also became a role model for everyone. He got a bat autographed by a player and got 4 free tickets to go to a game.

50 Habits of Successful People

Habits 36-43

36. They have a big engine. They work hard and are not lazy.

37. They are resilient. When most would throw in the towel, they’re just warming up.

38. They are open to, and more likely to act upon, feedback.

39. They don’t hang out with toxic people.

40. They don’t invest time or emotional energy into things that they have no control of.

41. They are happy to swim against the tide, to do what most won’t. They are not people pleasers and they don’t need constant approval.

42. They are most comfortable with their own company than most.

43. They set higher standards for themselves (a choice we can all make) which in turn produces greater commitment, more momentum, a better work ethic and of course, better results.

“It’s not living that matters, but living rightly”

                                                                                                                                        -Socrates

Life doesn’t have as much value as it would originally if you’re doing the wrong. The whole concept in life is not live but to strive in life and leave your mark while choosing the right.

                                 50 Habits of Successful People

                                                   (Habits 31-35)

31. They are secure. They do not derive their sense of worth of self from what they own, who they know, where they live or what they look like.

32. They are generous and kind. They take pleasure in helping others achieve.

33. They are humble and they are happy to admit mistakes and apologize. They are confident in their ability, but not arrogant. They are happy to make others look good rather than seek their own personal glory.

34. They are adaptable and embrace change, while the majority are creatures of comfort and habit. They are comfortable with, and embrace, the new and the unfamiliar.

35. They keep themselves in shape physically, not to be mistaken with training for the Olympics or being obsessed with their body. They understand the importance of being physically well. They are not all about looks, they are more concerned with function and health. Their body is not who they are it’s where they live.

Student Success Statement

“ You are accountable for YOUR choices “

-Thomas S. Monson

Actions have consequences, whether they are good or bad consequences the outcome depends on you. Choose the right and the chances of you facing bad consequences are slim, choose the wrong and the chances of you facing bad consequences increase, only you are solely responsible for your actions.

50 Habits of Successful People

(Habits 21-30)

21. They don’t believe in, or wait for fate, destiny, chance or luck to determine or shape their future. They believe in, and are committed to actively and consciously creating their own best life.

22. While many people are reactive, they are proactive. They take actions before they have to.

23. They are more effective than most at managing their emotions. They feel like we all do but they are not slaves to their emotions.

24. They are good communicators and they consciously work at it.

25. They have a plan for their life and they work methodically at turning that plan into a reality. Their life is not a clumsy series of unplanned events and outcomes.

26. Their desire to be exceptional means that they typically do things that most won’t. they become exceptional by choice. We’re all faced with life- shaping decisions almost daily. Successful people make the decisions that most won’t and don’t.

27. While many people are pleasure junkies and avoid pain and discomfort at all costs, successful people understand the value and benefits of working through the tough stuff that most would avoid.

28. They have identified their core values (what is important to them) and they do their best to live a life which is reflective of those values.

29. They have balance. While they may be financially successful, they know that the terms money and success are not interchangeable. They understand that people who are successful on a financial level only, are not successful at all. Unfortunately we live in a society which teaches that money equals success. Like many other things, money is a tool. It’s certainly not a bad thing but ultimately; it’s just another resource. Unfortunately, too many people worship it.

30. They understand the importance of discipline and self-control. They are strong. They are happy to take the road less traveled.

Student Success Statement

“Ask yourself is it right or wrong and act accordingly.”

                                                                                                            -Otto Graham, Jr.

When you want to do anything, you should always think before you act. If it’s wrong then it might be a choice or option you might want to re-think or re-consider before you make your final choice, especially if it’s a permanent one. If you don’t feel right about doing something, then most likely it is not the right choice.

50 Habits of Successful People

Habits 11-20

11. They align themselves with like-minded people. They understand the importance of being part of a team. They create win-win relationships.

 12. They are ambitious; they want amazing- and why shouldn’t they? They consciously choose to live their best life rather than spending it on autopilot.

13. They have clarity and certainly about what they want (and don’t want) for their life. They actually visualize and plan their best reality while others are merely spectators of life.

14. They innovate rather than imitate.

15. They don’t procrastinate and they don’t spend their life waiting for the ‘right time’.

16. They are life-long learners. They constantly work at educating themselves, either formally (academically), informally (watching, listening, asking, reading, student of life) or experientially (doing, trying)… or all three.

17. They are glass half full people – while still being practical and down-to-earth. They have an ability to find the good.

18. they consistently do what they need to do, irrespective of how they are feeling on a given day. They don’t spend their life stopping and starting.

19. They take calculated risks – financial, emotional, professional, and psychological.

20. They deal with problems and challenges quickly and effectively; they don’t put their head in the sand. They face their challenges and use them to improve themselves. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT!!!

Jimmy is a very trustworthy person, young but can still be looked up to as a role model. He choose the right by speaking the truth and not hiding the facts about his rope climbing occurance. It was interesting because he preffered speaking the truth and doing the honorable thing rather than winning and holding the record.

50 Habits of Successful People

(HABITS 1-10)

(Anon)

1.       They look for and find opportunities where others see nothing.

2.       They find a lesson while others only see a problem.

3.       They are solution focused.

4.       4. They consciously and methodically create their own success, while others hope success will find them.

5.       They are fearful like everyone else, but they are not controlled or limited by fear.

6.       They ask the right questions – the ones that put them in a productive, creative, positive mindset and emotional state.

7.       They rarely complain (waste energy). All complaining does is put the complainer in a negative and unproductive state.

8.       They don’t blame (what’s the point?). They take complete responsibility for their actions and outcomes (or lack thereof).

9.       While they are not necessarily more talented than the majority, they always find a way to maximize their potential. They get more out of themselves. They use what they have more effectively.

10.   They are busy, productive and proactive. While most are laying on the couch, planning, over-thinking, sitting on their hands and generally going around in circles, they are out there getting the job done.

Student Success Statement

“Doing what is right, fair, and honorable is more important than winning or losing.”

-Chick Moorman

Winning is not the same accomplishment it is meant to be when it is not done rightfully. You simply won’t feel the same because you didn’t win it fairly, which is braking a unspoken code of honor of sportsmanship.

Keys to Successful Living

Part 4

( Anon )

What is personality? The word “personality” comes from the root persona, which means “mask.” Our personality is a mask that we wear. We don’t have to wear a mask when we are by ourselves; we wear a mask to express ourselves to others. Our personality is a character, and that character is composed of certain habits. Each of us has numerous habits; so when we want to understand our personality, we should understand our habit patterns. A habit pattern is a conscious thought or actions that one repeats again and again. This creates a groove in the unconscious mind and forms an unconscious habit. Unconscious habits are stronger than conscious habits. All habit patterns are self- created. When we sit down and try to understand which of our habits control our life, we see that there are many deep-rooted habits within us.

Choose habits that will mold your personality into a super successful student and person.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT!!!

Student Success Statement

“No man will ever be totally free who is living a lie.”

Marvin J. Ashton

The truth is always going to come out sooner or later. So it is best to always live your life with the truth. Even though you think lying is the best choice in certain situations to assure others, your not helping them because they will be living a lie.

Keys to Successful Living

Part 3

(Anon)

We should understand our capacities and potentials, and then we should express ourselves in the external world with full confidence, acting steps without any reservations. Thus there are three in performing an action: first, forming an opinion within ourselves; second, expressing our opinion to others; and third, executing our opinion in action.

 Understanding habit patterns

The main thing that one should learn in life—and it is not taught in the home or in the schools – is self-analysis. We should learn to analyze ourselves, we can analyze our personality by understanding our habit patterns. This is not difficult. We should simply try to be consciously aware of every action we perform and realize that our actions are virtually our thoughts. Without thought there can be no action. Habit patterns and thoughts are revealed through behavior. There is a branch of psychology called behaviorism that is based on this concept. But one should understand that external behavior alone cannot reveal everything about a person.
